Last month, my cousin reached out needing some professional headshots. I was racking my brain trying to think of somewhere to take his photos that wasn't either a blank background or a boring brick wall. I wanted my cuzzo to look a little prestigious, to look like he's been in the game for a least a couple years- I mean, he is a young professional! Whenever I looked for inspiration for "Professional Male Headshot Photography," I found either Willem Dafoe doing impressive yet extreme poses in a studio or some middle aged in outisde their super nice office buildings. I felt stuck. The Dafoe poses don't work for an insurance salesman (although they are super cool) and my cousin doesn't work in a super fancy office building.
I kept thinking, scouring the internet for inspiration, debating if we should rent a studio. Nothing. Until finally, it hit me. My cousin doesn't need to work inside a fancy building, he just needs to stand in front of one. It seems kind of obvious now, but when you get internet tunnel vision, good ideas can be hard to come by.
We met up downtown, my cousin in his super professional suit, and headed for the State Capitol. I know it sounds silly to pose someone for headshots in front of any legal building especially if their career has nothing to do with legal work, but just stick with me. Using the busy cityscape, neat architecture, and other natural surroundings helped build an atmosphere. When people see his headshots, they will associate him with the visuals of the setting-- professional, bustling environment. It shows that he can and does work in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.
